Currency volatility rises with fewer participants as Japan markets close

The Japanese yen jumped from the 157-range against the dollar to the high 155-range during holiday-thinned trading on May 4. 

TOKYO -- The yen jumped sharply against the dollar in the foreign exchange market on Monday, briefly strengthening to the high 155 yen range per dollar for the first time since Friday. Before the surge, the currency had been trading around 157.20 yen to the greenback.
