TAIPEI/TOKYO -- The move by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to partner with Sony Group for joint production of next-generation image sensors represents an unusual alliance born from growing concern over a stagnant smartphone market and rising South Korean and Chinese competition.
